Live Free or Dine: Martha’s Exchange serves five-star food without a smile

I went there with a girlfriend years ago and had a similar impression; I felt as if the waitstaff was doing me a favor by waiting on me. It was as if they were all friends of the owners' children and simply couldn't imagine being fired for providing poor service.

I sat at the bar and ate recently, the bartender (Irish) was great, and the food was fantastic.

I went there a few weeks ago and thought it was great. good service, good food and prices were reasonable for lunch. It depends on your server.

My Fiance and I went a while back and sat at the bar. It was early and not crowded at all. We were never even acknowledged by the bartenders. Not even a 'hello, I'll be right with you'. No eye contact whatsoever. After a good 10 minutes of this, we got up and walked out. Can't imagine we would ever go back.

Maybe the server didn't like being your slave.

I think you have the wrong idea of what a waitress/waiter job actually is. There is no slavery component involved.

Some people wait table because of reasons that have nothing to do with wanting the job, but needing the job. And I've found over the years that those who NEED the job seldom really enjoy what they do and act accordingly.
